The City of Bloomington Parks & Recreation Community Gardening program offers a variety of gardening classes. The Community Gardening classes are co-sponsored by Hilltop Garden and Bloomingfoods. Organic Gardening Basics

Growing food at home has many challenges: Weather, pests, weeds, disease, soil. Learn time-saving tips on how to grow a successful garden without the use of harmful chemicals or petroleum-based fertilizers. Learn how to feed your soil so that your plants are happy and healthy, how to identify noxious weeds before they get out of control, and how to protect from pests using holistic methods that encourage biodiversity.

Things are Looking Up: Going Vertical in Your Garden

Trellises, stakes, hanging pots, pyramids, walls: All are useful tools in your small garden. Many vegetables, herbs, and flowers can be trained to grow in a compact space with extra support. Come learn to make the most of your space by growing up. The sky is the limit!

Gear Up for Gardening

Gardening season is upon us, and it is never too early to start planning. Topics include plant spacing, seed starting, companion planting, and soil maintenance. Participants will leave with a tray of cold-weather seed starts of their choosing. Sign ups for the new community garden plots at Switchyard Park will also be available. Welcome to a new season in the garden!

Seed Starting and Plant Propagation

Produce your own plants at a fraction of the cost of buying them from the store. We will cover the basics of seed starting as well as more advanced methods of rooting cuttings, layering, and root division.
