Since 2010, Hilltop has provided free seed kits for kids to PK-12 teachers. In 2022, more than 1,800 seed kits were given to 68 classes at 17 schools in 5 counties. Teachers who request seed kits receive the supplies necessary for each student in their class to grow their own mini-garden, including: soil, planting instructions, a planting tray for each student, and 3 types of seeds for each student. Seed kits can be used to teach a variety of topics including plant science, nutrition, math, responsibility, caring, and team work. After seeds grow, children can plant them in a school garden, or take them home to grow with their family. Seed kits are made possible by: donations of plastic trays from Cook Incorporated, funding support from the Bloomington Garden Club, and the donated time of numerous volunteers. Sign-ups for teachers to reserve seed kits will open in the spring.
